2,700 working satellites share their orbits with 8,800 tonnes of space debris
Space debris is an emerging challenge for the space economy, as collisions can lead to mission termination if not successfully avoided. IMS provides specialized support to the European Space Agency (ESA) in the domain of Space Situational Awareness (SSA), delivering collision avoidance support to mission customers, including compliance verification analyses with respect to debris mitigation guidelines.IMS focuses on the development of back-end systems and infrastructure, as well as the maintenance of ESA internal and external applications and web frontends. The company delivers operational services, including routine operations and Launch and Early Orbit Phase (LEOP) support for ESA’s conjunction event prediction system for both internal and external customers. In addition, IMS is responsible for the maintenance, evolution, and upgrade of ESA’s conjunction event prediction system, and contributes to the development of space debris tools, mitigation strategies, and regulatory support.
Debris objects travel at several km/s. In case of impact, they may destroy working satellites entirely.
5-10 cm in LEO and 30cm-1m in GEO can be tracked. Smaller objects estimated by statistical models.
Collisions can be avoided through manoeuvres using our conjunction monitoring system and compliance verification.
Guidelines are in place to limit new debris creation, covering mission design, operation, and disposal phases.
